Bringing the soul of the forest home
There is something so grounding about having a jar of the woods sitting right there on your kitchen shelf. We made these shiitake mushroom slices for those moments when you’re standing at the stove, wanting to turn a simple dinner into something that feels a bit more like a gourmet experience. By gently drying our harvest, we’ve managed to catch all that deep, savory umami and keep it ready for whenever inspiration strikes.
If you’ve ever wondered why a restaurant ramen or a slow-simmered stew tastes so “complete,” dried shiitake mushrooms are almost always the hidden hero. They have this smoky, intense personality that fresh mushrooms just don’t have. Once you let them soak and wake up, they become wonderfully tender and meaty—perfect for giving a Tuesday night stir-fry or a Sunday roast that extra heartiness that feels like a warm hug.
We also just love that this shiitake mushroom food treats your body as well as it treats your taste buds. We see them as little natural powerhouses, filled with Vitamins B and D to keep you feeling your best. In the kitchen, these culinary shiitake mushrooms are the ultimate teammates; they’re like tiny sponges, soaking up your sauces while sharing their own earthy soul with the rest of the pot.
Everything we do is rooted in the dirt of Northern BC. These healthy mushroom slices are grown, dried, and packed with a lot of love at Smithereens Farm. We’ve always believed that when you respect the soil, the food tastes more like it’s supposed to.
The Kitchen Ritual Preparing them is a nice, slow moment in your day. Just let the slices “nap” in some warm water or broth for about 20 minutes until they’re plump and ready to go.
One little tip from our kitchen: Please don’t toss that soaking liquid! It’s basically “liquid gold.” Use it as a mushroom tea to add a massive boost of flavor to your rice, gravies, or soup bases.
Whether you’re a pro behind the stove or just someone who loves a good, honest meal, we’re so happy to share a piece of our farm with you. Here’s to making your next home-cooked meal a little more of an adventure.
